Finally! A great Korean market!!!

Ever since I left Los Angeles I have not been able to find a decent Korean market. I went to a couple of Asian markets in the Portland area but none were Korean. There are some niced sized asian markets I have shopped at since I moved here but again, not Korean. Actually I did find one but all of the meets were frozen and it was small. Very disappointing and not what I was used to after living in LA where they had Koreatown which was way more impressive then their Chinatown.

I was surfing on the web trying to find sushi grade salmon (Rachael from Fresh Approach blogged about it and got my curious) and saw a mention of this store called Super H Mart. Dao and I had plans to go to the movies but I talked her into going to this supermarket instead and boy was I happy. Of course, I was also hungry so the first thing we did was go to the food court. There were tons of restuarants in the shopping center but I wanted to check out the food court. They had it divided up by cuisine. I went for the Korean, naturally. They had a lunchtime bento box, with your choice of meat (I went with the kalbi, my fave) with a miso soup and sides. All of this for only $7. Already a great start to our trip (did I mention it was 30 minutes away?).

If you have a large asian market near you chances are the produce there will be cheaper then what you will find in a regular grocery store. I bought blueberries for 99 cents and everything I saw here was cheaper then what I normally buy them for. There was also fresh seafood here. I bought the sushi grade salmon but chickened out when I got home and cooked it, LOL. I'm just not ready to make my own sushi. I also bought big fat juicy shrimp for $5.99 lb. The tiger shrimp were $4.99! I also bought the short ribs that kalbi is made with and some marinade so I can make it at home. Of course, another thing you can get here is kimchee of all different kinds of varieties! But if you think that they only specialized in cabbage or radishes you would be incorrect. The varieties of kimchees are endless. Needless to say this was a wonderfully succesful shopping adventure and when BAM comes up I'm sure I'll be taking her there. Super H Mart is a chain so check online to see if they have one near you, if there is one, I definitely recommend stopping in for some great shopping.

I should have taken a pic of the shrimp, the looked so good. I'm trying to decide what I want to do with the shrimp. I was thinking of boiling and using for salads but now I'm thinking I need to do something more with them so feel to give me any ideas.

I never stop by your blog on an empty stomach tho!

Mmmm....kimchee! You gotta love just about anything pickled and spicy! LOL

So cool that you found that! I haven't been exploring in my new city yet! Maybe this summer I'll find some place to buy grits and corn bread mix! HAHA

Yes, this means I made a blog too! I'm such a follower! *hangs head in shame*
Well at least I waited til now to become a sheep and never went w/the crowd in high school. If I would have I'd now be a pothead living in a trailerpark, with kids I birthed before senior prom! Ahhh..midwestern hillbilly high! LOL

OMG, look at all that beautiful produce! I really start missing really fresh produce this time of year.

I'm glad you found a market to your liking. Almost as good as LA?

I just got back from their website, if you need any Sweet Cinnamon Punch or a Korean Cool Pillow, they have coupons :) But alas, no Super H's on the west coast :( It looked like the it was mostly red kim chee - blech, it makes me shudder.
There is a page of recipies, I have already emailed it to my dad. --PS - Fabulous picture with the oranges, it made me really want one.

Hey chick, welcome to the world of blogs! My bookmarks are going to be all blogs! I didn't know you ate kimchee, my esteem for you has risen, LOL. You have a little one in tow, so exploring is a much bigger deal for you! I can barely drag myself out!

Sarah, I love your new icon! Is asian food popular in New Zealand?

Karen, this market is better then the ones I shopped in LA. It's bigger and cleaner. I actually thought of you while I was there because I know how much you enjoy asian food.

Ewww, swwet cinnamon punch sounds awful, LOL. I bet you could find something interesting to buy online for your dad though. Father's day will be here before you know it.

Glad that you enjoyed the pics of tomatoes!!! If it makes you want oranges, no worries. I didn't realize they had recipes posted, I will definitely have to check.

Wow, I'm glad I already ate. But I got damned hungry looking at all that wonderful produce. Now I'm going to have to check and see if there are any markets like that here where I can get produce more reasonable. Mmm, fruit!!! Let me know what you did with the shrimp. I bought a bag from Sam's Club, but they're frozen. I'm thinking of making scampi with it.

Hugs!!

Yep, pretty popular. Steves fav at the moment is a place near his work called Chow that cooks this noodle thing with veggies for a small fee. He goes there to have lunch as often as possible at the moment. There are several Asian supermarkets in the city and we have a couple of lovely deli around the city to. My fav at the moment is a french bakery called Bordeux that makes custard crosaints and yummy breads and the coffee is to die for. Yum!

Rosie, I ended up boiling the shrimp and doing the peel and eat thing with a salad. I used lime juice with salt and pepper to dip the shrimp in to enhance the flavor (same thing I do with crab, LOL). I love scampi, just don't like the calories.

OMG, I love filled croissants! One of my favorite things about staying at Bally's is it's connected to the Paris casino and they have a bakery there with an apricot turnover that is my fave!

OMG! OMG!! How did I miss this one? Oh, I know, sick child, sick husband and work, work, work. The usual.
I read about this market today and I AM GOING!!!! I have a recipe for the Kalbi marinade that I want to try. I also want to try the bottled marinade. I can't wait!
