Find your grail...

Tonight Dao and I had our own date night. Through work she got tickets to see the opening night of Spamalot and since I love musicals I was totally excited to go with her. First we went to eat some sushi then off we were to the theater. The Fox theater was a beautiful venue. It has the feeling of an open air theater because there is a false sky, sort of like how the Paris or Caesar's casino feels like. We had pretty decent seats which was good because in case you don't know it since I have such a larger then life personality, I am a tad short.

I have to admit going in, I didn't have high expectations even though they won the 2005 Tony for best musical. It's a musical loosely based on Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail, a movie which I never watched and really have no intention of watching, LOL. I was worried about the humor. I didn't know if I was going to like it or not. Turns out I really had a good time.

It was a satire on King Author and Camelot, hence the name Spamalot, LOL. It was a very tongue in cheek comedy about musicals with everything in it, a Lakers cheerleading routine, traditional Phantom of the Opera love songs (approriately titled the Song that Goes Like This, since every musical needs one), Camelot as Las Vegas, the outing of a character (my favorite scene, LOL) and many other LOL moments and songs. Everything is done tongue and cheek and you are in on the joke. They even pull someone up from the audience. I'm so sad it wasn't me. This guy was shy and not making the most of it, you so know I would have, LOL.

During the curtain call the words show up on stage for the last song so you can sing along and there's confetti, it felt like a party. I almost forgot to mention the restroom at intermission! Even though there was a line all the way back to the stairs they had the line moving faster then girls could pee. They actually had ushers inside the restroom directing traffic, I loved it!

For those of you who watch Grey's Anatomy, Sara Ramirez won a Tony award for playing the Lady of the Lake. She was in the original Broadway production. Her character is the only female other then the backup dancers. I wish I had the talent, drive or ambition to be up on that stage. The Lady of the Lake kicked ass. There was one point where she comes out and sings just because she hasn't sung since the second act started and she was ticked. Here's the first part of the song:
What ever happened to my part?
It was exciting at the start.
Now we're halfway through Act 2
And I've had nothing yet to do.

I could picture myself singing this, LOL. You can see this clip here. but I chose to share a better version of one of the songs. It's about searching for your Grail, what makes you happy. I really enjoyed this song and Sara rocks it and yes, that's Tim Curry from my fave Rocky Horro Picture Show!
The woman who played her here was also phenomenal. There was this scene where she changed the color of her dress with the flick of her hand, I'm still trying to figure out how, LOL. When she shows up with the giant grail in the song Dao leans over and days the grail is taking steroids, I pointed out so was her hand, LOL.

I also have to say I'm impressed how these shows change the scenery and make it so seamless. I thought the Lion King had one of the most impressive sets. This one was more simplistic but I still enjoyed the scene changes.

I am totally happy I went to see the show. I didn't take a nap today so on the way to the show I started napping like crazy but I am pleased to say I was able to stay awake and enjoy the show.

I've only been to the Fox once, and I didn't get to experience the bathroom ushers. Guess I'll have to go back. hehehe.
You only said you "ate sushi", then went on. No pictures? No food raves? Did it suck? LOL!

Ooooh, sounds like a fun night! I love musicals too. And I love how they set up the stage and such. I love Monty Phython! The humor is smashing! So typical Brit. Priceless. JK can quoute some of the scenes. Heh.

Hehehe, yeah, I hate that when they choose someone else from the audience knowing you can do a better job at it. I have learned a trick though. If you look too eager, they won't choose you, so now I try to look terrified or shy and I usually get the spot. LMFAO!

Did you bother to put on any make up at all? *grins*

Glad to hear you had a blast chick!

The Fox was realy nice, I enjoyed it and liked that it wasn't too big.

The sushi was nothing to write home about, obviousely, LOL. I knew that when I picked the place but D is not a big sushi eater so didn't want her to spend money at an expensive place, plus I am trying to save money and not doing a very good job of it, LOL.

I would have LOVED to go up on stage, as you know, LOL but they have the number of a seat worked into the show so whoever sits there gets pulled up on stage. So at least it didn't go by enthusiasm or lack thereof, LOL.

I am trying to DL some of the music today. It was fun.

Hey, chick, that's so funny that you went to that. I was going to tell the Vegas gals that it has opened here at the Wynn Theatre (I think it's the Wynn) for an unlimited showing. Didn't know if anyone would be interested or not. I loved Monty Python and the Holy Grail movie. It's the only one I really liked though. LOL.

Sounds like a great date night for you two. Too bad the sushi wasn't up to speed. At least the show made up for it.

Now I have to go home and check out the music. I love me the musicals!!! I've already downloaded the music from the movie we saw the other day, Music & Lyrics. LOL.

Spamalot was fun! I heard that Ave Q wasn't doing too great at the Wynn. Did this replace it?

the one song/scene I wasn't really into was the one with all of the farting, LOL.

Always look on the bright side of life . . . oh yeah, that's Life of Brian. I like Monty Python stuff, Tim more than me. I think Spamalot was here for a limited run, but we couldn't really afford to go. I heard it was fun tho.

Glad you had fun.

Karen, hopefully next time it comes around you two can go and if not then maybe a trip for two to Vegas or NYC sometime in the future! That was the song we sang at the end, it's hard to read the words one the clouds but still fun to try. You know I was singing at the top of my lungs, LOL.

This just souns like so much fun! I wasnt sure what spamalot was, I am so glad you included the clip.
You also totaly sucked me in with the Greys Anatomy tie in... Does anyone think Meridith is dead? I just cant see it, exept I hear she is tough to work with in real life.

Leiha said...

There is no way in the world they would kill her off but at this point I wouldn't really mind, her character is the most annoying.

Of course I know how to work it and I knew I would get people with the Grey's tie in. I am after all, a professional blogger, LOL.

Leiha, you crack me up! Spamalot has replaced AveQ at the Wynn! I can't believe you have not seen the Monty Python movies! They can be fun, though I get tired of them shortly!! I can't believe that Dao does not like sushi!!!

The theatre sounds great! I'm a big fan of bathroom ushers!!!

Dao doesn't dislike sushi, she just is not the fan that I am, LOL.

I decided we need bathroom ushers everywhere! Life would be grand!
